Key Factors To A Successful Outage Response: Three Phases Of Restoration

restoration pictureIt doesn't begin and end here, but the greatest visibility and greatest risks during the major outage response occur during the restoration phase. Here is where all of your planning, organization, systems, and processes are put to work. Not only must you do this well, you must be able to communicate what you are doing. This is especially challenging, since most of the stakeholders - customers, regulators, executives, and investors - are not familiar with what is required to restore power in the aftermath of a major storm. It is imperative that you instill confidence in your response employees and allies coming to your aid - they must be convinced that you know what you are doing! PSOR has the expertise to help improve your performance in all of the restoration components below.

Restoration

5. Mobilization Processes:
Getting the right people in the right place at the right time.
6. Command Center Structure/Activation/Operation:
Major storm response is "organized chaos", with the emphasis on "organized"!
7. Emergency Response Organization:
Every facet of the response organization must be prepared; it is not "business as usual"!
8. Logistics:
Lodging, Meals, Staging, Materials, Transportation, Etc.: Perhaps the most thankless, but critical roles in the effort.
9. Field Restoration Processes:
Getting the "boots on the ground" and optimizing their effectiveness is the "bread and butter" of restoration.
10. Status Reporting/Conference Calls:
If you can't measure it, you can't improve it. Reports and call processes are very important.
11. Communications - External, Internal:
In major outage events, as much as at any time, customer perception is reality! Keep your organization and constituents informed of what you're doing!
12. Call Center Operations:
A strong case can be made that the phone agent has the toughest storm assignment. It is crucial that they get the information they need to tell your story well.
13. Safety Organization, Processes:
Safety is a fundamental priority. To fail in this area is to fail overall.
